OREAS 173 has been prepared from manganese ores sourced from the Glosam Mine
situated within Postmasburg Manganese Field located in the Northern Cape
Province of South Africa. A small quantity of barren oxidised siliciclastic
material was added to achieve the desired Mn grade. The ores are composed mainly
of braunite group minerals including braunite (3Mn2O3.MnSiO3), partridgeite
(Mn2O3) and bixbyite (Mn,Fe)2O3.
Fifteen laboratories participated in the program employing the following
methods:
Mn ore package for Al2O3, BaO, CaO, Cr2O3, Fe2O3, K2O, MgO, MnO, Na2O,
P2O5, S, SiO2, TiO2 & V2O5 by borate fusion with XRF finish;
Thermogravimetry: Loss on Ignition (LOI) at 1000°C;
4-acid digestion for full suite elemental package by ICP-OES and MS
finish;
Specific gravity by gas/liquid pycnometry or volumetric
flask.
